Starting or stopping homeschooling — the forms to file

One click opens each official form, so you can read it before you fill anything in. If you are leaving a public or charter school to teach your child at home, the Notice of Intent is the form that starts the process.

File the Notice of Intent with the Miami-Dade Home Education Office within 30 days of starting, and tell your child's school or charter in writing so the withdrawal is completed. File the Notice of Termination within 30 days of finishing. Every link above opens the official document in a new tab.

Florida required subjects — coverage checklist

Florida's home education law does not prescribe a curriculum or a subject list — you choose the materials and the plan. The seven areas below are the subject areas Florida requires its public schools to teach, so they are the quickest way to check that your year covers everything.

You have checked 0 of 7 subject areas.

Topics Florida also requires schools to teach

Florida also requires its schools to teach the specific topics below. Home education families are not bound to this list, but covering the ones that fit your child's level keeps the year well rounded and the annual evaluation easy.

  • American history, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution
  • Civics, civil government, and the responsibilities of citizenship
  • The history of Florida
  • The history of the Holocaust
  • The history of African Americans
  • The history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders
  • Health education: nutrition, safety, disease prevention, and substance use
  • Life skills: decision-making, resiliency, and conflict resolution
  • The elementary principles of agriculture
  • The effects of alcohol and narcotics on the body and mind
  • Kindness to animals
  • Conservation of natural resources

What Florida requires of a home education program

  • File a written Notice of Intent with your district within 30 days of establishing your program.
  • Keep a portfolio of records and materials — a log of educational activities and samples of your child's work — for two years.
  • Provide an annual educational evaluation showing progress at a level commensurate with your child's ability.

Florida law does not prescribe a curriculum or a subject list for home education — you choose the materials and the plan. The areas above are the ones our families cover, and the subjects we can help you plan and shop for.
